Growing up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, it was only a matter of time before I developed a love for animals. My family lived on the outskirts of town; not too country, not too city. We had lots of room and lots of land for a lot of different kinds of animals. I, of course, managed to come home with an idea for a new pet every day of the week. My friend’s cat had just kittens and I wanted one, or my friend found a stray dog wandering through their yard. A neighbor was selling a horse while another neighbor was moving and had to get rid of their hamster. Animal after animal. My parents weren’t very fond of having so many critters, but they never exactly said no because I had proven myself to be responsible enough to take care of them. Well… one day, for my fourteenth birthday, I opened up a gift from Mom and Dad and found inside, delicately padded, my very own IPOD. It was gorgeous with its smooth, black exterior and perfect IPOD screen. I loved it. That evening I decided to take it with me when I went on my rounds – feeding the various animals that had come to call my family’s house a home of their own. I had taken care of the dogs and set out some food for the cat. I was going into the barn to get the horse feed when I saw a fox. It was so cute that I thought, maybe, I could interest it in some cat food. The fox disappeared inside the open doors, however, running over the ground like a red dart. It had spooked the horses by the time I got inside. I could hear the whinnying and crying from a mile away. Cautiously, I went through the stalls, looking for the renegade fox until I thought I saw him. In the corner by my favorite equine, he was huddled, watching me. I approached slowly, not wanting to scare him. My brand new IPOD had been completely forgotten in the excitement. I crept closer and closer until all of a sudden the horse reared up, screaming like a banshee and sending the fox running. I ducked as best I could, but I tripped on some hay and went sprawling to the ground. My IPOD fell out of my pocket and clattered to the barn floor – just in time for the horse to land on it. I couldn’t believe how close that hoof had come to my head… I calmed the horses down as best as I could before grabbing the IPOD and getting my dad to help me. When I had time to look over thing, I realized the lcd for IPOD had been broken. My mom told me not to worry though, and mailed it to an IPOD repair company that specialized in IPOD LCD replacement screens and said they could repair IPOD video. A few weeks later, things were back to normal.
