When I enrolled in college, I knew my life would never be the same. I was ecstatic. I was ready for change and ready to get my life started. The first big step was moving out of my parents’ house – which I adjusted to easily. I had to adapt to college classes next, which was a little harder but still not that bad. The trouble, for me, came with making friends. I’m not the most social person in the world… and right away I realized that the college crowd a bit different from my high school clique. I started to panic every time I was put in a social situation, which of course made things worse. It wasn’t until I met my friend, Brendan, that I really started to open up. He introduced himself to me and I realized during our conversation that we’d come from the same city – Jacksonville, North Carolina. As it turned out, Brendan and I became the best of friends. We went everywhere and did everything together. We were inseparable and decided to start dating. It was right before my birthday, I remember that. He decided to surprise me with a brand new IPOD. I was so excited! I’d never had one before and it was so beautiful. I think it meant a lot of me mostly because it was a gift from Brendan. I took it everywhere we went so that he could know how much I appreciated it. When we were in class, I’d be listening to my IPOD. At dinner, listening to my IPOD. Studying, listening to my IPOD. It got to the point that Brendan would joke about being jealous of his gift. We’d laugh it off, of course. I think he knew it meant so much to me simply because he had given it to me. Anyway though… one fateful day came when I we were walking to class together and some jerk on a bicycle came rushing past us. His handlebar somehow caught my backpack and yanked it out of my hands – taking me and the IPOD with it. I fell flat on my face and heard the IPOD clatter to the pavement, a few yards away my backpack went down as well. That fool almost lost control of his bike, but he regained composure and just kept going! I was furious. Brendan helped me pick up my things and that’s when I realized that the bike had cracked my IPOD screen. Brendan told me not to worry about it though, he’d take care of things. He knew of an IPOD repair company he found when he was looking into repairing an IPHONE that offered lcd for an IPOD and could get it repaired for me. A few weeks later, he came through! I was so happy to have my IPOD back.
